Holdenhurst Road to Ashley Road

The following walking and cycling improvements are underway along Ashley Road in Bournemouth as part of the sustainable travel route between Bournemouth train station and Jumpers Common in Christchurch:

  • Improvements to the existing bollards on Northcote Road, making it easier for cyclists to navigate
  • A new toucan crossing to replace the existing school crossing patrol outside Kings Park Academy, between its junctions with South Road and Grantham Road. The nearby bus layby will be changed to accommodate this crossing
  • A new toucan crossing on Ashley Road near the entrance to Kings Park, improving access between the new facilities in the park and the quieter, low traffic route along Windham Road towards Bournemouth train station and the town centre - this will replace the existing crossing outside no. 133 Ashley Road, between its junctions with Boscombe Grove Road and South Road
  • Widening the path on the western side of Ashley Road (between Windham Road and Boscombe Grove Road) to enable pedestrians and cyclists to access the new crossing
  • Boscombe Grove Road and South Road to remain one way for motorists, although cyclists will be able to use both roads in either direction.

To help maintain traffic flow and to ensure there is a clear approach to the pedestrian improvements and the cycle contraflow, the following changes will be made:

  • Double yellow lines opposite no. 145 Denmark Terrace replacing the current no waiting restrictions between 8am-7pm
  • Double yellow lines on the southern side of Boscombe Grove Road for 13m from its junction with Ashley Road
  • Double yellow lines to be introduced next to no. 1 South Road for 12m on the inside of the bend
  • Double yellow lines to replace controlled zig-zags on both sides of the road between 123 and 137 Ashley Road.

The introduction of these changes was subject to the outcome of a separate legal process. We invited comments on the proposed Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) in November 2022 and the TRO was recommended for approval in March 2023.

Full details of the traffic regulation order process and outcomes are here.

The improvements on Northcote Road, Boscombe Grove Road and South Road are complete and largely complete on Ashley Road.

A number of other proposals were put forward in our 2021 public consultation for the route towards Bournemouth Station. It has now been confirmed that further funding will need to be secured to implement these proposals.

Rising construction, labour and fuel costs, growing inflation and changes to national design standards for cycling infrastructure mean south east Dorset’s original TCF budget, awarded pre-pandemic in March 2020, is no longer sufficient to build the entire network of cycle, walking and bus improvements planned across the region.

Priority has been given to TCF schemes that link into existing sustainable travel infrastructure, providing an immediate interim level of connectivity and more continuous travel routes.

Public consultation

A public consultation on the proposals for the Bournemouth railway station to/from Jumpers Common, Christchurch route was undertaken in spring 2021. The original proposals are available on our consultation hub for reference. All responses were analysed and have helped to shape the current scheme designs.  A report summarising the results is available here.

A report detailing our responses to issues raised is available here.
