Redhill roundabout

New walking, wheeling, cycling and road junction improvements are planned at Redhill Roundabout and the Muscliffe Lane/Castle Lane West junction from March to October 2025. They will link into the bus and pedestrian improvements and cycle path on Whitelegg Way, the advisory cycle lane on Redhill Avenue, the river path and cycleway along the River Stour and the quiet route along Wimborne Road service road to Muscliffe Lane.

It forms part of a sustainable travel route between Merley, Poole and Christchurch – sections completed to date include Whitelegg Way and the sustainable travel route on Magna Road from Wood Lane to Gravel Hill.

Road resurfacing on Wimborne Road will also be undertaken at the same time.

What's planned

Redhill Roundabout:

  • Shared footway and cycleway installed, providing a link for people walking and cycling around Redhill Roundabout
  • New toucan crossings on Redhill Roundabout on the Redhill Avenue and Wimborne Road arms
  • New parallel crossing on arm of Redhill Roundabout with Redhill Drive
  • Exit arm of the roundabout on to Redhill Avenue to be realigned to accommodate the shared path and promote lower speeds
  • Junction improvements on the exit arm of the roundabout on to Park Lane including the installation of tactile paving
  • New shared footway and cycleway installed from the Whitelegg Way exit on the roundabout connecting into Wimborne Road service road
  • Streetlighting improvements.

Muscliffe Lane/Castle Lane West junction:

  • Existing crossing over Muscliffe Lane to be upgraded to a toucan crossing allowing people to walk and cycle across the road in one stage
  • Major junction refurbishment with new, smart energy efficient traffic signal technology installed to improve traffic flow
  • New shared path area from the parade of shops across Muscliffe Lane, connecting into the quiet walking and cycling route along Wimborne Road service road to Redhill Roundabout
  • Streetlighting improvements
  • Three parking spaces removed to allow for the new shared path, with other parking spaces outside the shops unaffected.

Road resurfacing:

One kilometre of road resurfacing on the A341 Wimborne Road (between Ferncroft Road and Northbourne Roundabout) and on the A3060 Wimborne Road/Castle Lane West (between Redhill Roundabout to just east of Muscliffe Lane) will be undertaken at the same as the Redhill Roundabout and Muscliffe Lane/Castle Lane West improvements. Sustainable road ‘recycling’ construction methods will be used where possible, reusing existing road materials.

This work is being funded through central government’s Challenge Fund and Local Transport Fund.

Public consultation

Public consultation about the proposals at Redhill roundabout was undertaken in February – June 2021. All responses were analysed to help shape the final scheme designs. Reports summarising the results of consultation have been published:

In addition, having analysed the responses, we have published ‘responses to issues raised’ documents:

A public information event about the proposals was held in Bournemouth on 9 November 2022.

The installation of new crossings and changes to parking near the parade of shops (three parking spaces removed), was subject to a separate legal process and a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) was advertised and consulted on in November 2022. The decision to make the order was made on 22 March 2023. Further information is available here.
