Kinson roundabout to Northbourne roundabout

This section is currently on hold until further funding has been secured, following a national review by the Department for Transport of the Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) programme.

Rising construction, labour and fuel costs, growing inflation and changes to national design standards for cycling infrastructure mean south east Dorset’s original TCF budget, awarded pre-pandemic in March 2020, is no longer sufficient to build the entire network of cycle, walking and bus improvements planned across the region.

Priority has been given to TCF schemes that link into existing sustainable travel infrastructure, providing an immediate interim level of connectivity and more continuous travel routes.

Note: Resurfacing of the carriageway between Ferncroft Road and Northbourne Avenue will be undertaken in 2024 as part of ongoing highway maintenance work.

2021 proposals

The proposals consulted on in the 2021 public consultation included:

  • Introducing new two-way protected space for cyclists at the eastern end of Wimborne Road near Northbourne Roundabout
  • Carriageway resurfacing between Ferncroft Road and Northbourne roundabout
  • Dedicated space for pedestrians and cyclists around Northbourne roundabout and new crossings installed.

Public consultation

Public consultation about the proposals at Northbourne Roundabout, Redhill Roundabout and along Castle Lane West including Broadway Roundabout was undertaken in February – June 2021. A public information event was held in Bournemouth on 9 November 2022. For the consultation, the proposals were split into three sub-sections:
