Mountbatten roundabout to West Howe roundabout
We are installing a new signalled crossing point located by the footpath leading to St Georges Drive, making the area safer for pedestrians and cyclists. The speed limit on this section of Ringwood Road has been reduced to 30mph to improve safety, and traffic signal improvements at Mountbatten Roundabout have bene introduced to help improve bus journey times.
What we’re doing
Works are due to start on 24 March 2025 and are anticipated to complete by late spring 2025, although there may be a small pause before the signal heads are installed. The crossing will be barriered off and not for public use until the signals have been completed.
Disruptive works will be carried out between 9am and 3pm every day. To ensure the safety of workers, there will be single lane closures on each side of the dual carriageway: please follow the on-road signage instructions. BCP Council Neighbourhood Services will be carrying out the works and they have contacted residents on Ringwood Road whose driveways will be directly affected.
It is anticipated that there will be two overnight closures to complete surfacing works. Closures will take place on Tuesday 29 April and Wednesday 30 April from 7pm until 6am. There will be no through access on Ringwood Road. Specific access details for residents and businesses on Ringwood Road and side roads are below:

It is inevitable that these works will cause some disruption but we are aiming to carry out the works with the minimum of inconvenience to residents and other road users. We thank you for your patience while the works are carried out and apologise in advance for any disruption caused. Please let us know as soon as possible if you have any problems during the work, so we can try to resolve any issues.
Should you have any medical requirements or concerns regarding the two overnight closures please contact us at transformingtravel@bcpcouncil.gov.uk.
Further plans
Further funding will need to be secured to enable the rest of this section to go ahead.
Rising construction, labour and fuel costs, growing inflation and changes to national design standards for cycling infrastructure mean south east Dorset’s original TCF budget, awarded pre-pandemic in March 2020, is no longer sufficient to build the entire network of cycle, walking and bus improvements planned across the region.
Priority has been given to TCF schemes that link into existing sustainable travel infrastructure, providing an immediate interim level of connectivity and more continuous travel routes.

2021 proposals
The proposals put forward as part of the 2021 public consultation included:
- A new two-way protected cycle track on the eastern side of Ringwood Road between High Howe Lane and Dominion Road
- Changes to traffic signal timings at the Mountbatten Roundabout to improve bus journey times
- The existing path behind Turbary Retail Park, connecting Wallisdown Road and Turbary Park Avenue, would be converted to shared use
- The existing footways upgraded to shared use on both sides of Ringwood Road between Mountbatten Roundabout and St Georges Drive
- More priority for cyclists and pedestrians travelling at the junctions of Ringwood Road and adjoining roads
- A new toucan crossing on Ringwood Road, near the Paddington Grove junction, connecting to the upgraded shared use path on the western side
- A lower speed limit of 30 mph between the two roundabouts
- Five bus stop locations to be upgraded along route, which could include accessibility improvements, new shelters and real-time information
- New planting installed at the junction of Dominion Road and the access road into Lidl, preventing vehicle movements. Vehicle access would remain into Lidl from Poole Lane
- The existing footway between Dominion Road and West Howe Roundabout would be converted to shared space, connecting into a new parallel crossing on High Howe Lane and existing facilities around the roundabout
