An update on the work on Ringwood Road

Find out the progress we've made on Ringwood Road and what's currently happening.
Published on Friday 13 December 2024

With work well underway to improve walking, wheeling, cycling, bus and road junction facilities and planned resurfacing set to take place soon along Ringwood Road, we thought we’d give an update on the progress to date and what’s currently happening.

We do appreciate the impact the work on Ringwood Road is having on your journey times and are doing our best to ease this as much as possible. Thank you for your patience while we build long term travel improvements for everyone now and for generations to come.

In the spirit of Christmas, and throughout the duration of the works, please ensure our workers are treated with respect.

Scheme update

The first phase of our work on Ringwood Road covers the road between Alderney and Mountbatten roundabouts, and around Sea View Road junction. It is expected to finish in spring 2025.

Phase two is planned between spring and autumn 2025, covering Balston Road to Hunt Road and Alderney Roundabout to Mannings Heath Road.

Phase three will be between Sea View Road and Old Wareham Road Roundabout, and is planned from autumn 2025 to spring 2026.

Finally, phase four is from Old Wareham Road Roundabout to Mannings Heath Road, planned between spring 2026 and winter 2026.

Alderney roundabout – Mountbatten roundabout (phase 1)

The work taking place here is making great progress and we have:

  • Moved the central reservation between Alderney and Mountbatten roundabouts. This created enough road width to start building the new two-way cycle track
  • Removed the existing safety road barrier
  • Adjusted the kerb on the western side, improving the footpath area around the existing bus layby at Belben Road
  • Improved Belben Road and Dolbery Road South junctions.

We’re now working on:

  • Constructing the new two-way cycle track on the east side including improvements to the drainage and bus stop
  • Installing staggered toucan crossings, linking Bourne Valley Nature reserve and Belben Road.

Traffic management update

The lane closures have now been removed for the Christmas period. The one lane southbound closure between Alderney and Mountbatten roundabouts will go back in place on 6 January for one month. Short term ad hoc northbound single lane closures are also planned during this period. All lanes on Ringwood Road between Alderney and Mountbatten roundabouts will be open.

Further closures will be needed at the end of this first phase of work for road resurfacing – more details will be shared in the new year.

Sea View Road junction (phase 1)

So far, we have:

  • Removed the existing traffic islands
  • Amended kerbs in the south-west quadrant of Sea View Road junction, including drainage, kerbing and traffic signal installation
  • Restrengthened the road across Sea View Road junction to address poor ground condition and mitigate future road cracking/maintenance issues.

We’re now working on:

  • Further drainage, kerbing and traffic signal installation at Sea View junction
  • Installing a two-way cycle track on Ringwood Road from Haskell Recreation Ground to Balston Road
  • Traffic light installation work.

Traffic management update

Sea View Road will remain closed to northbound traffic at its junction with Ringwood Road until 18 February. You will not be able to exit from Sea View Road onto Ringwood Road in any direction. No right turn from Ringwood Road into Sea View Road.

Southbound traffic on Ringwood Road will still be able to turn left into Sea View Road.

To facilitate the Ringwood Road construction works we have refurbished existing council building at Haskells Recreation Ground to act as welfare facilities for our workers. These will be available for the community’s use once the works are completed.

Next phase of work

The second phase of work on Ringwood Road is due to take place from spring 2025 to autumn 2025 between Balston Road and Hunt Road and between Alderney Roundabout and Mannings Heath Road.
