Alder Road to Coy Pond

A new zebra crossing is planned for Alder Road in Poole, connecting Recreation Road with Sheringham Road.

There is currently no crossing facility here other than a small island which is not suitable for all users given how busy the road is. Recreation Road is also difficult to cross, making it hard for pedestrians to get to and from the park and the corner shop. The new crossing will enable people walking, pushing a pram, using a mobility scooter, or riding a bike to cross in a safe and timely manner.

The design and location of the new crossing has taken into account the existing traffic flows, driveways, accesses, the park, bus stops and the presence of underground utilities, as well as being designed to best address the needs of anyone who may wish to use the crossing.

It is expected that children from Heatherlands Primary School, St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, and St Aldhelm’s Academy will all benefit from the new crossing, as well as local residents and anyone travelling on foot, mobility aid or cycle through the area as part of a longer journey.

Alder Road to Coy Pond Quiet Route

The crossing is part of a series of route improvements that have been funded by Active Travel England. In early 2026 the council asked local residents for their comments and ideas for making the route between the new crossing and Coy Pond Road safer and more pleasant for people walking, wheeling and cycling. The consultation was hosted on Have Your Say. Following review of residents’ feedback on the project, some changes and additions have been incorporated into the proposals.

Some elements of the proposed changes require a formal Traffic Regulation Order or Notice, and these will be advertised locally and on the Highways Consultations page in May.

The construction work is expected to start in summer/autumn 2026. Some preparatory works have already been carried out, such as trial holes and tree removals. Four small trees near the junction with Recreation Road have been removed in order to create space for the new crossing. All the removed trees will be replaced nearby, within the park.

This scheme connects to the zebra crossing near Coy Pond Gardens which was delivered last year, along with the onward route through Bournemouth Gardens into the town centre. Once all the proposed works are complete, there will be a convenient active travel route, using a mixture of quiet roads and off-road facilities, all the way from Upper Parkstone to Bournemouth Town Centre.
