Glenferness Avenue

Work on new walking, wheeling and cycling improvements on Glenferness Avenue between Talbot roundabout and Leven Avenue is largely complete.

It forms part of a sustainable travel route between Bournemouth town centre and Ferndown. It will link into the sustainable travel improvements planned further south in the Glenferness Avenue area around Leven Avenue, Benellen Avenue and Branksome Wood Road and into the new walking and cycling facilities through Upper Gardens.

Work underway

  • Removal of road markings along Glenferness Avenue between Rothesay Road and Elgin Road South, and between Alyth Road and Alford Road. New road markings, including advisory cycle lanes, will then be reinstalled between these locations to match changes to waiting restrictions. These were subject to Traffic Regulation Order which was advertised and consulted on during February and March 2022. The decision to make the order was made on 23 May 2023. Further information is available here.

Outstanding improvements

  • Light segregation (specific design detail is to be confirmed) for cycling either side of Glenferness Avenue between Talbot roundabout and Elgin Road (south entrance). This requires changes to waiting restrictions which was subject to a separate legal process. A Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) was advertised and consulted on during February and March 2022. The decision to make the order was made on 23 May 2023. Further information is available here.

Completed work

  • Two new four-metre-wide, 37.5-metre-long prefabricated bridges for walking and cycling were lifted into position over the railway line either side of the existing road bridge during a 27-hour window in October 2023. The existing footbridge on the eastern side of the road bridge has been removed and recycled. The existing road bridge remains unaltered
  • Bridge ramps and stepped cycle lanes have been built between Elgin Road and Alyth Road
  • Junction improvements at East Avenue, Roslin Road South, and Elgin Road
  • New toucan crossings just north of East Avenue and at the junction of Glenferness Avenue and Leven Avenue
  • Two new parallel crossings: one near the southern approach of Talbot roundabout and another between Roslin Road South and Elgin Road
  • New parallel crossings and cycle lanes between Talbot roundabout and Alford Road
  • Tree planting near the bridges
  • Resurfacing of the carriageway and footways between Talbot roundabout and Alford Road
  • Stepped cycle lanes between Talbot roundabout and Alford Road, and between Leven Avenue and Rothesay Road
  • Bus stop improvements
  • An upgrade to the junctions of Elgin Road (south) and Rothesay Road, to enhance safe pedestrian and cyclist accessibility across both side roads.

Public consultation

Public consultation on these plans was undertaken 24 February to 31 March 2021.

All responses were analysed and helped shape the final scheme designs and a report summarising the results of consultation published in addition to our responses to the issues raised.

A public information event was also held on Wednesday 10 November 2021 at Bournemouth University.
